D3 Eagles Maul Renssalaer and Top Loyola
FGCU D3 Hockey Picks up Two Solid Home Victories!
October 19, 2009
When presented with the opportunity of playing a D2 opponent, the Eagles rose to the occasion.  Outshooting Renssalaer by an incredible 66-21, the D3 Eagles dominated throughout the game winning by a resounding 11-1.  Jordan Hume was strong between the pipes, yielding a single goal with only 3 minutes remaining in the game to agonizingly lose his shutout. Twelve shooters found their way on to the score sheet, led by Eric Cosma (1g, 4a) who is proving to be quite a playmaker.  Nathan Altman recorded the hat trick, Steven O’Neill added 2 more (2g, 1a), with other singles going to John Goddard (1g, 1a), Matt Casey , Chad Nykiel, Kelly Johnson (1g, 1a) and Thomas Patterson (1g, 2a).  Special teams performed well, too, with the power play being effective on 2 of 6 opportunities,
while the penalty killers held their opponents scoreless on 3 chances. As would be expected in such a lopsided game, tempers flared several times, especially in the third period, but cooler heads prevailed. The Eagles improved to 6-2 on the season with a 5-2 victory over the Loyola Greyhounds on Sunday night.  Leading the charge for the  Eagles once again was Eric Cosma with a goal and an assist.  Eric is averaging 2 points per game this season versus 1 point per game last season.  Newcomer Thomas Patterson had 2 assists and is establishing himself as a bona fide play maker for the team. Single goals went to Steven O’Neill (1g, 1a), Charles Fradella, Lee Khan, and Kelly Johnson.  The game was relatively tame after last nights game against Renssalaer, with only 17 minutes in penalties being called. The Eagle power play was again very effective, capitalizing on 2 of 3 chances.  Eagles outshot Loyola by a 42 to 29 margin, once again demonstrating their offensive prowess. Next weekend the Eagles travel to Augusta, Georgia (about 70 miles east of Atlanta) where they will take on Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Richmond.
