| D3 Eagles Sprint Out of the Gate FGCU Eagles Open With Three-Game Winning Streak! October 2, 2010 After a week-long tryout in late August and several weeks of early morning practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Eagles finalized their Division III roster with seventeen players returning from prior years and ten new faces. While most of the team hails from across Florida, seven out-of-state players represent Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Mexico City, Mexico. Anxious to rev up their run to the ACHA Nationals, the Eagles kicked off their 2010-2011 season at home with three games in three days beginning Friday, September 17. First up was a pair with the Spacecoast Hurricanes, the Eagle's Junior B affiliate from the well-regarded Metropolitan Junior Hockey League. |
| In the first game, the Eagles dominated and prevailed with a final score of 4-0. In the rematch, the Hurricanes stepped up their game and kept the score even until late in the third period when the Eagles finally pulled away with two goals for a 6-4 victory. On Sunday afternoon, September 19, the Frozen Tide from the University of Alabama skated into Germain Arena as the Eagles first ACHA opponent. Alabama, seeking to earn a berth in the South Region play-offs this year, played a consistent game, but just couldn't mount sustained offensive pressure until late in the third period. Throughout the contest, the Eagles were winning the battles in their own zone and center ice, while Alabama's defense stood tall at the other end. The Eagles scored early in the 1st period, added another midway through the 2nd period (both nice pass plays to an open man in front) and finished with a power play goal with a minute left in the 3rd. Final score 3-0. These teams will rematch for a pair in Huntsville, Alabama in late October. Mark your calendar for the next two games when the Eagles of Embry-Riddle University fly into Germain Arena on Friday and Saturday, October 8-9, both at 6pm. |
