Embry-Riddle, much improved over last year, made a strong showing despite being outshot 40 to 17. They have developed a physical game using size to advantage, and their goaltender, Eric Hart, had a stellar performance between the pipes. But the Eagles are a powerful team as well- one which has aspirations of going to the Nationals (which we are hosting) and the credentials to make it happen. Penalties were evenly distributed with Embry-Riddle spending 16 minutes in the box versus 14 minutes by the Eagles. Referee Conti allowed the teams to play despite several scrums in front of the nets.
The win was a solid team effort which saw some outstanding efforts by both veterans and newcomers. Led by the attitude of Ricky Beaton and the focus of Joe Russo, two established veterans, the Eagles’ points were spread amongst several players. Top performing veterans were Russo (1G, 3A), Scott Short (2G, 1A), Mike Fowler (2A), and Nathan Altman (1A). Newcomers Kelly Johnson (brother of D2 Jesse Johnson) with 2 goals and an assist, Thomas Patterson (2G, 1A), Trent Zimmer (3A), and Steven O’Neill (1G) all added some punch to the attack.
First year coach Evan Crawford, former D2 player, commented after the game that it was a solid start to the season, but that improvement needs to be made in order to take on the top teams. The first real test comes this Sunday night at Germain Arena where the Eagles will be hosting the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets for an 8:30 p.m. start. Not only did GT finish in the top ten nationally last year, but they recently defeated D2 University of North Carolina in overtime. This should prove to be one of the most evenly matched games of the season. Come out and support your team! Go Eagles!
Note: the D2 team opens at home on October 9 against Grand Valley State- another game you won’t want to miss! |
