Eagles Take the Sting Out of the Hornets
Canadian Affiliate Suffers Two Losses to FGCU
February 11, 2007
This weekend, the FGCU Eagles faced strong competition from their international affiliate, the Mississauga Hornets.  The Hornets are a Juvenile "AAA" team from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada that compete in the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL). Former Mississauga Hornets players Matt Maida, Allan Penney, Justin Moore, and Tyler Mackereth are all currently on the FGCU Hockey Team's roster.  The Hornets have provided a hotbed of talent for the Eagles and FGCU always looks forward to playing against old linemates and giving the opportunity to new prospective players to showcase their talents.

Friday night, the Eagles came out strong and were the first on the board when Peter Flores, assisted by Zach Messer and Eric Rodriguez, riffled the puck neatly over the shoulders of the Mississauga goalie, only five minutes into the first period. The Hornets, however, didn't stay down for long. Mississauga rallied to score three unanswered goals in the next five minutes to put Hornets up by a score of 3-1. The Eagles have been extremely tough to beat at Germain Arena in the past and FGCU would be uplifted by the home crowd as they mounted a comeback.   Just thirty seconds after the third Hornets goal, captain Zach Messer capitalized on a great pass from line mate Nic Williams to pull the Eagles within one goal and go into the first intermission down 3-2. The second period belonged to the Eagles as they capitalized on many powerplay opportunities and scored three goals with the man advantage. Allan Penney, Mike Marrero, and Alex Lymber all added their names to the game sheet as the second period ended with FGCU on top 5-3.  FGCU recorded 29 shots on goal in this period alone - almost half of the game total!  With this intense pressure, the Mississauga goaltender couldn't recover and after Mike Marrero and Matt Maida added two more goals during the third period, the final score was 7-3. FGCU set a record as the Eagles recorded a season high 67 shots on goal in this game.
Defenseman Peter Flores scored the first goal of the weekend series against the Hornets.
Andrew Kobrin heads into Regionals with a 2.13 Goals Against Average (GAA).
Rookies Jordan Hume and Nic Fernandez complete the dream team of goaltenders.
Nic Williams had a solid weekend against the Hornets earning 2 goals and 1 assist.
On Saturday night, the Eagles jumped on the scoreboard in lightning speed. Before one minute had ticked off the clock, FGCU had amassed a two goal lead leaving the Hornets shell-shocked. Mike Sellitto and Nic Williams were responsible for the early onslaught. The first period would end with the score 2-0 in favor of the Eagles. The teams traded goals during the second period, with Brett Galbraith, Justin Moore, and Tyler Mackereth each bulging the twine for the Eagles only to have the Hornets answer with two goals of their own. At the end of the second period, the score was 5-3 in favor of FGCU. In the third period, Nic Williams added the lone goal to secure the victory for FGCU and make the final score 6-3. Both teams played a pure style of hockey and this was a great weekend for the Eagles as they prepare to head to Youngstown, Ohio to participate in the ACHA Division 2 Southeast Regionals tournament next weekend.  The Eagles are currently ranked #3 in the Southeast division and they will be the #1 seed at the tournament.  The top two teams to finish at the Regionals tournament will earn a spot in the ACHA Division 2 National Tournament , which will be contested in Fort Collins, Colorado in early March.
