| FGCU Captures 2007 Gulf Coast Clash Cup Eagles dominate the tournament field! January 15, 2007 The 2007 Gulf Coast Clash was contested this past weekend in Fort Myers, Florida at the Germain Arena complex. As teams from all over the country converged to the Southwest Florida area, fans eagerly awaited some exciting hockey competition. With that said, this year's tournament proved to belong to the host team from Florida Gulf Coast University from start to finish. The Eagles outscored their opponents 29-6 over the four day tournament and completely dominated the competition. In round robin play, the Eagles started the tournament against Southeast rival Life University. The game ended in favour of the Eagles by a score of 4-1. Although Life University has improved since the two teams last met in early October of 2006, FGCU was disappointed with their effort and looked to improve their game as the tournament wore on. Next on the slate for FGCU was the Illinois Fighting Illini from Champaign, Illinois. The Illini put up a valiant effort but fell to the Eagles by a score of 9-2. In the final game of the round robin, FGCU would faceoff against the University of Virginia Cavaliers. The Cavs have one of the oldest club hockey team's in the country, but unfortunately their string history could not help them against a stronger FGCU team, who dominated the scoreboard to win 11-2. |

| After the round robin, the Eagles found themselves sitting comfortably in first place and would take on the Fighting Illini in the 2007 Clash Championship Game. The contest started out slow as the Eagles only managed a one goal lead after the first period. In the second period, FGCU started to pull away with three quick goals and before you knew it the tournament which lasted four days over the Martin Luther King holiday was over and the Eagles were crowned the champions for the second time in team history. FGCU becomes the first team to win the Gulf Coast Clash Cup twice in the tournament's five year history. The weekend provided some great memories for the visiting teams. The entire FGCU hockey family would like to thank all the teams that attended this year's event and hope to continue the string tradition of hosting college hockey in the Florida for years to come.
