FGCU Captures 2011 Gulf Coast Clash Championship
Eagles Win Their Third Gulf Coast Clash
January 17, 2011 by Kaitlyn Brandt
FGCU hosted the Gulf Coast Clash tournament this past weekend hosting games against Michigan State University, Boston College, and Colorado University. The weekend was an eventful one for FGCU’s Hockey Program with games starting Friday evening continuing on through Sunday evening. This was a chance for the Division II team to showcase their talents against some of the best in country. The Eagles kicked off the successful weekend on Friday night with a 6-0 win over the Boston College Eagles. A 6-3 win followed on Saturday night over the Michigan State Spartans and the Clash concluded with FGCU capturing the Gulf Coast Clash Championship courtesy of a 7-3 win over the Colorado Buffaloes.
“The weekend was a huge success for both the Eagles Hockey team and the FGCU student body,” said Lendino. “With the support of the screaming fans, we were able to win all three games and capture the Gulf Coast Clash Championship.”

There was also a competition amongst Greek life within the tournament itself. The Greek organizations had the opportunity to rally their members and win money for their philanthropies.

The gentlemen of Kappa Alpha Order also scored a win, coming in first for the Greek Life Challenge. In order to win the Challenge they had to have the most brothers in overall attendance during the Clash and also have the highest percentage of overall members during the Clash. Their winnings totaled $500.00 and will be donated to their philanthropy, the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“The support showed by the multiple Greek organizations not only made the atmosphere more treacherous for the visiting teams, but also helped inspire the Eagles to put on a show for their fans,” said Mike Lendino, Division II captain.

The Eagles Hockey team will next face off against the University of Denver Pioneers on Friday, January 21st and Saturday, January 22nd. Puck drop for both games is at 8:30 in the Blue Rink of Germain Arena.
