| Highlights of the game included some huge individual efforts. Captain Christian Colarusso is to be commended for battling through a shoulder injury and netting the first goal of the game on an early neutral zone breakdown from the Buffaloes. Newcomer Mike Selitto scored a hard-working goal as he buried a wrap-around on his backhand. As overtime settled nothing between the Eagles and Buffaloes, the game headed to a shoot-out. Local favorite Kevin Olsen of FGCU took the first shot of the showdown. After a great horizontal move at the edge of the goal crease, Olsen moved across the net to create enough room for a five-hole goal between the Colorado netminder's pads. Andrew Kobrin came up big for the Eagles stopping the first shot from the Buffaloes with relative ease. Brian Foster would score next for FGCU has he blasted a shot top shelf and stunned the Buffaloes. Kobrin would go on to make another big save, but the Buffaloes matched it with a huge stop of their own on Matt Bur. Colorado, facing a must score situation, was blessed with some good fortune as their shooter mishandled the puck and loss control in the middle of a move, but watched the puck trickle into the Eagles net with elation. The Colorado bench erupted as they had some new found life. It would be short-lived though as freshman sensation Mike Selitto scored one of the most beautiful goals of the FGCU season to seal the deal and turn Germain Arena into a frenzy first thing on a Wednesday morning. |
| FGCU Hockey Finishes 6th in Nation Ice Eagles Defeat #1 Ranked Colorado Buffaloes March 14, 2006 Heading into the 2006 ACHA Division III National Championships, the Florida Gulf Coast University Hockey Team was a severe underdog after losing eight of their key players to ineligibility. What the rest of the country forgot about were the eighteen players who still remained in the Eagles line-up. As the team was set to play the University of Colorado Buffaloes in the very first game of the tournament, the scene was set for an early round upset. With great determination and after intense preparation, the FGCU Hockey Team outlasted the #1 ranked team in the country to successfully pull off the biggest upset in recent ACHA history. Team President Matt Maida noted "the entire Southwest Florida and FGCU community should be very proud of this accomplishment. To pull off this victory after all that has happened to these players in the recent weeks, is truly unbelievable. It may have been the best display of heart and willingness to win that we will ever witness from the FGCU Hockey program!" |
