Eagles Split Weekend Series With Ohio State
Buckeyes Provide Some Great Entertainment to Southwest Florida Hockey Fans!
November 3, 2007 by Greg Sorrells
Fort Myers, Fla. - The Eagles hoped to extend their 8-game win streak Friday night against the Buckeyes of Ohio State, but were dealt their first home loss of the season in a 6-5 overtime win for OSU. FGCU opened up the game with a neutral zone steal by Nic Williams that led to a goal by Brett Galbraith off a rebound. OSU scored less than a minute later when the puck slid out of Andrew Kobrin's grasp and into the stick of Tyler Moyer who instantly shot it in. With seven minutes left in the period, a group of players fought for control of the puck behind the OSU net. Justin Moore emerged with the puck and slid it over the top of Dru Delaforet's skate and into the net. The second period started as a great defensive effort on both sides, but quickly turned into a scoring session as the Buckeyes knocked in three unanswered goals. A power play goal was the first and came ten minutes in from the stick of Andrew Jordan. OSU scored again on a power play when Dave Vanas took a precise shot at the net following a face off win. With two minutes remaining, the Eagles couldn't manage to get the puck out of their zone and the end result was a power play goal from Jordan. Determined not to let the last twenty minutes rock them, FGCU added on three goals of their own. Williams scored on a breakaway 57 seconds in.
Scott Elder had a strong weekend series defensively for the Eagles.

Five minutes later, the puck escaped from a pile up in front of the net and was taken in by Evan Crawford. With eight minutes left in the game, the Eagles put their last point on the board. Moore passed the puck from behind the net to Matt Maida who had an open look and made use of it.

Down, but not out, OSU pulled Delaforet and put a sixth man on the ice. With only 47 seconds remaining and a failed shot at an empty net by FGCU, Zack Ajzenman found the net; forcing the game to sudden death overtime. Almost three minutes passed before a shot by Ryan Underwood went wide and found Mike Lundy who slapped it in to give OSU the 6-5 overtime win.

On Saturday Night, FGCU won in comeback fashion against OSU in a 4-3 game that was dominated by the defense. The first period was the best display of this dominance as neither team was able to put the rubber in the net.

OSU's starting goalie, Kelli McCall, was taken out on a play seven minutes into the game. Brett Galbraith was chasing down a puck on its way to the opposite net when McCall completely left the box. They met at the puck and Galbraith pummeled McCall with his body, sending him airborne. McCall was replaced by Dru Delaforet.

OSU claimed the game's first point with a Mike Wylie shot from the face off circle; assists Mike Lundy and Ryan Underwood. Two minutes later, OSU scored again when a failed poke check resulted in an open mid shelf shot for Lundy; assist Jarret Rice. Evan Crawford deked around the defense and was able to tip the puck over the skate of Delaforet; assist Justin Aquino.

The Eagles scored again a minute later when a pass from Nic Williams went across the ice in front of the net and found Galbraith with an open shot at the net. Brock Bookwalter scored OSU's final goal with three minutes remaining in the second period; assists Andrew Jordan and Alex Cooper.

A face off at six minutes into the third period was the starting point to a shot by Allan Penney that went wide into the right of the goal. The final goal of the game was scored with five minutes left when Galbraith shot once again off a cross ice pass; assists Matt Maida and Scott Elder. Division 2 is now ranked #1 in the Southeast. They have a four game, tournament style, road trip that starts on Thursday, November 8th.
