When the FGCU Hockey Team made the decision to move to Division II, everyone realized that the program would get the opportunity to go up against some big name schools and there is none bigger than Michigan State. Heading into the team's most anticipated game in the program's history, the Eagles were more than prepared to take on the Spartans from Michigan State. The game got off to fast and ferious paced and never slowed down. As soon as the game started, one thing was a clear certainty - Michigan State was a very talented hockey team. The Spartans skated and passed the puck with confidence and it became transparently evident that this was going to be a tough game for the Eagles. In what Coach Jensen described as "one solid team effort" the Eagles were able to explode in the second period after a scoreless first with four big goals. The sudden outburst from the Eagles shocked the Spartans and the fans in attendance as the FGCU Hockey Team successfully pulled off the upset and defeated Michigan State convincingly with a score of 5-1. Eagles goalie Andrew Kobrin played spectatular hockey between the FGCU pipes and had his shutout spoiled with only five seconds remaining.
Spartans and Chippewas Fall to FGCU Hockey Team Ice Eagles Leave Lasting Impression in Michigan! October 12, 2006 As the fall weather rolled into the state of Michigan last weekend, so did the FGCU Hockey Team. The Ice Eagles landed in Detroit, Michigan on October 6, 2006 with high expectations for their inaugural season as a Division II Team. Standing in the way of a winning opening weekend were some of the best teams that the state of Michigan and Division II hockey has to offer. First up for the Eagles was the always tough Central Michigan Chippewas. As the boys from Florida rolled into Mount Pleasant, Michigan on Friday afternoon, they were greeted by a Central Michigan tailgate party at the arena. It was evident that FGCU was in an enthusiastic hockey town. As the puck hit the ice to start the 2006-2007 Season, FGCU came out flying and introduced Central Michigan to the growing phenomenon of Florida hockey. The Eagles were able to bury two quick goals in the first period and they would bulid on that momentum to

eventually win their season opener by a score of 4-1. The team would notch three power play goals and were led by the Penney, Maida, and Moore line which was responsible for three of the team's four goals. This was the team's first ever victory at the Division II level. There was very little time to celebrate as the Eagles had to return to the rink the next day at 1:00 PM to take on the Chippewas again. As the two teams faced off in part two of the weekend series, the story was a little different. Central Michigan came out more prepared and determined and scored two goals in the first period to put the Eagles in hot water heading into the locker room for the first intermission. With some hard work, the team showed some character and battled back in the second period to tie the game up. In the third period, FGCU finished off the comeback with three strong goals and had cemented two solid victories over the nationally ranked Central Michigan Chippewas. Coach Jensen noted that the team played well, but still had lots to work on. All in all, the FGCU Hockey Team had put up two solid performances in their first two games, but realized that it would take a lot more than two victories to earn the respect of the Division II hockey world.

With a record of 3-0, the Eagles would move on to what could easily be their biggest challenge of the year, the Davenport University Panthers. The Panthers have consistently been the top team in the Central region for the past year and are well-known as the team to beat in Division II. Although tired, the Eagles were up for the challenge. Despite an early goal, the Eagles were outmatched by the Panthers and went down 4-1 after the first. FGCU would keep fighting and end the game respectably with a final score of 7-3 in favor of Davenport. Despite the fact that the Eagles did not win, the team gained some very valuable experience by playing one of the best team's in the country and look forward to getting another opportunity to take on the Panthers. The team ended the road trip in great spirits with a record of 3-1-0 and returned to Fort Myers on October 10, 2006 to begin their preparations for the 2006 Division II National Showcase Tournament. The program would like to thank all of the teams from Michigan for being such great hosts and look forward to returning to Michigan again next season for some more great hockey. The Eagles will take on Ohio State next weekend in Youngstown, Ohio.
