FGCU Eagles Home Opener Spoiled Grand Valley State Lakers Earn Two Wins on the Road! October 12, 2009 by Joe Shenstone Estero, FL - Grand Valley State University from Grand Rapids, Michigan rolled into town looking to prove that they are still among the top 16 teams in the nation. They had been defeated twice the previous weekend by the reigning champions, the Davenport University Panthers, and were hungry for wins. Unfortunately for FGCU, this was the Eagles first taste of action this season and they were not prepared to take on the GVSU squad. With 5 newcomers on the team, the loss of veterans Penny, Moore and Maida, and the preseason injury to goalkeeper Andrew Kobrin, the Eagles were at a decided disadvantage for their first outings. Friday night’s home opener started with a bang for the Eagles with Brett Galbraith scoring on a nice setup from Mike Lendino and Jesse Johnson less than a minute into the game. GVSU replied shortly thereafter leaving the game tied after the first period. The visitors went ahead in the second period on a goal scored within the first minute of play. The remainder of the period was filled with penalties with both teams trying to gain the upper hand. Ultimately, in the third period, it was GVSU that came out ahead. Their speed and play-making overwhelmed the Eagles in another rough penalty-filled period of hockey that ended with GVSU gaining a hard earned 6-3 win. Bright spots for the Eagles were a pretty goal by Jason Almcrantz on a steal next to the GVSU net, and a power play goal by newcomer Ryan Kovesdy on a feed by Kevin Mixon. |
