Eagles Prove to Be Road Warriors in Ohio
FGCU Hockey Team Goes 2-0-1 at Division 2 Showcase
October 16, 2006
Challenging games are what we asked for, and challenging games are exactly what we got! This past weekend the FGCU Hockey team traveled to Youngstown, Ohio, to participate in the highly regarded ACHA Division II National Showcase Tournament. Other top-ranked participants in the tournament were the University of Dayton, William Patterson, Siena, Ohio State, Bowling Green, Toledo, Texas, DePaul, Lindenwood, Rowan, St. Joseph's, Temple, Wagner, and Wisconsin Milwaukee among others. The Eagles played three intense and very close games this weekend, and finished the weekend with an impressive 2-0-1 record.

Friday night, the Eagles arrived at the rink refreshed and ready to take on Ohio State University; what Coach Jensen termed the "Game of the Month."  The Eagles came out with strong intentions, but Ohio State was a tough competitor.  Capitalizing on an FGCU power play advantage, the Eagles got on the board first when Justin Moore, during the chaos

in front of the net, slipped one past the Buckeye netminder. Ohio State responded quickly only four minutes later, with a goal of their own to even up the contest. The Eagles, though, were on a roll and could not be stopped. Rookie & freshman Mike Marrero let his light shine taking home the first hat trick of the season; scoring once in all three periods. Rounding out the scoring was Allan Penney, who scored in the waning seconds of the second period to give the Eagles some issurance heading into the locker room. When the final buzzer sounded, the Eagles won 5-3, and they were pumped as they had defeated new divisional rival Ohio State.

Saturday night proved to be the pinnacle of the weekend. Taking on the William Patterson Pioneers of New Jersey, the Eagles faced some of their most intense competition this season. Freshman Jordan Hume would make his second start of the season and played a fantastic game between the pipes. The game was tied at the end of regulation on behalf of goals from FGCU forwards Matt Maida, Brett Galbraith, and Nic Williams. A five minutes overtime period would settle nothing between the two teams, which meant only one thing - Shootout! In the first shootout of the '06-'07 season for the Eagles, Coach Jensen lined up his five shooters to take on the Pioneer goalie: Kevin Olsen, Mike Sellittio, Allan Penney, Uthman "Moose" Yamusenore, and Justin Moore. Of the five shooters, Mike Sellitto and Justin Moore were

the only two FGCU players to notch goals and that would prove to be enough as Eagles goalkeeper would only allow one goal. Jordan Hume played phenomenally and shut down the Pioneer's shooters. The team was ecstatic as everyone scrambled out on to the ice to pile up on Hume and Moore for the shootout win.

While Sunday morning's game was not as dramatic as Saturday's, the pressure was still on the team to perform as they took on the Bowling Green State University Falcons. The Eagles came out and played an amazing first period thanks in part to goals from both Matt Maida and Allan Penney. With a 2-0 lead, FGCU struggled in the second period and gave up two tallies to the Bowling Green Falcons. The Eagles were able to take back the momentum with two big goals from Maida and Williams and ended the second period ahead by a score of 4-2. The third period was the key to the game. The Falcons came within one goal of the Eagles, and in a last-ditch effort to tie up the game, they pulled their goalie, leaving an open net. FGCU's Justin Moore would seal the deal in the dying seconds and fired the puck down the ice from the red line into the empty net. FGCU defaeted Bowling Green by a score of 5-3.

The Eagles have gone 5-1-1 in their past seven games which have all been on the road.
Several FGCU Eagles Hockey fans made the trip to Youngstown, Ohio to support the team during the D2 Showcase.
