| Eagles Return to Form Versus Renssalaer FGCU Dominates Visiting Team From New York! October 19, 2009 A motivated D2 squad took to the ice on Friday night bent on proving their worth after last week’s frustrating losses to GVSU. Unfortunately for the Engineers of Renssalaer Politechnic Institute from New York state, they were caught standing on the tracks with a runaway locomotive headed in their direction. FGCU completely dominated the Engineers from start to finish. The Eagles were ahead by a score of 4-0 just eight minutes into the game and never looked back. This was a very different team than appeared in the season openers last weekend. They returned to their free flowing high speed offence so characteristic of teams past. Backchecking was tenacious and the team played with poise and confidence. |
| Leading the scorers for the Eagles was the ever potent Mike Lendino with a hat trick and 2 assists. Also netting three was feisty Mike Sellitto. Other big point getters for FGCU were Brett Galbraith (1g, 2a), Ryan Kovesdy (1g, 2a), Kevin Mixon (3a), Evan Goetz (2a), and Steve Gutowitz (2a). Nick Fernandez earned his first shutout of the season stopping all 25 shots that came his way. The two netminders for the Engineers weren’t as lucky facing 45 shots, most of which were taken at point blank range. Honorable mention to defenceman Tyler Mackereth with a huge perfectly executed hip check in the third period and, in fact, the entire defensive corps for shielding their goaltender very well throughout the game. Next weekend the Eagles will be hosting the Ferris State Bulldogs from Big Rapids, Michigan at 8:30 on both Friday and Saturday nights. The Bulldogs have had a strong start this season and should prove to be very able opponents. |
