Eagles Earn First Ever Victory Against A D1 Squad
FGCU Goes 2-1 on Road Trip to Virginia and Maryland!
October 22, 2007
Following a successful home opening weekend, the Eagles made the long trip up to Lynchburg, Virginia to take Liberty University in a weekend series at the LaHaye Ice Center. Liberty has one of the best club hockey teams in the entire country every year and play in front of 2000 fans on a nightly basis. Going into the first game the Eagles were a definite underdog as they ook on a very tough Division I Flames team. In dramatic fashion, FGCU shocked the ACHA community with a hard fought overtime victory. The final score was 4-3 in favor of the Eagles with goals coming from Penney, Moore, and Galbraith (2), and the overtime winner off the stick of Canadian Brett Galbraith. The Flames responded in the Saturday night contest and shutout the Eagles 9-0 in front of their home crowd. All in all, the trip to Lynchburgh was a great learning experience for FGCU. The Eagles headed north on Sunday for an afternoon match-up against another Division 1 squad, the University of Maryland Terrapins. FGCU steamrolled Maryland with an offensive clinic and went on to earn a 10-0 victory in Laurel, Maryland. The goalscorers were: Galbraith (2), Moore (2), Mixon, Crawford, Lendino, Mackereth, Barraco, and Marrero. Nick Fernandez earned his first shutout of the season.
Andrew Kobrin stopped 37 of 40 shots in the first game to earn a big win for the Eagles.
Brett Galbraith scored his second overtime winner against Liberty on Friday night.
Justin Moore had a four point weekend, including two goals against Maryland (D1).
Nick Fernandez earned his first shutout as an FGCU Eagle against Maryland (D1).
