| When the FGCU Hockey Team made the decision to move to Division II last year, everyone realized that the program would get the opportunity to go up against some big name schools and there is none bigger than Michigan State. Heading into one of the team's most anticipated game of the season, the Eagles were more than prepared to take on the Spartans from Michigan State. The game got off to fast and ferious paced and never slowed down. As soon as the game started, one thing was a clear certainty - Michigan State was a very talented hockey team. The Spartans skated and passed the puck with confidence and it became transparently evident that this was going to be a tough game for the Eagles. FGCU had one win and one loss against the Spartans last season, so this game would serve as the rubber match. The team would jump out to an early two goal lead with goals from Nic Williams and Justin Moore, but Michigan State would respond with four unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead into the third period. FGCU was able to pull off a hard earned comeback in the third period thanks to two goals from Matt Maida and the score at the end of regulation was 4-4. | Spartans, Chippewas, and Nittany Lions Fall to FGCU Hockey Team Ice Eagles Leave Lasting Impression in Michigan! October 9, 2007 As the fall weather rolled into the state of Michigan last weekend, so did the FGCU Hockey Team. The Ice Eagles landed in Detroit, Michigan on October 3, 2007 with high expectations for their second season as a Division II Team. Standing in the way of a winning opening weekend were some of the best teams that the state of Michigan and Division II hockey has to offer. First up for the Eagles was the always tough Davenport Panthers. As the boys from Florida rolled into Grand Rapids, Michigan on Thursday evening, they were greeted by a tough Davenport team. As the puck hit the ice to start the 2007-2008 Season, Davenport came out flying and scored two quick goals to take an early lead after one. The Eagles would battle back to tie the game at end of second period thanks to goals from Mike Lendino and Brett Galbraith. The third period was well played by both teams, but was won by Davenport in the end and the game would end with a final score of 5-4 in the Panthers favor. |

| For the Eagles, it was a difficult opening game of the season, but the team competed with pride and had a lot of positives to build off of before heading into the second game of the Grand Valley Invitational touney. Next up for the Ice Eagles were the Nittany Lions from Penn State. FGCU came out flying and quickly introduced Penn State to the growing phenomenon of Florida hockey. The game ended in a score of 7-3 for FGCU with goals coming from Crawford (2), Galbraith (2), Lendino, Penney, and Sellitto. With the win the Eagles would earn their first two points of the new season and head from Grand Rapids to Mount Pleasant, Michigan for a Saturday matinee match-up against the Central Michigan Chippewas. The Eagles swept the Chippewas last season and looked to improve on their 2-0 lifetime record against Central Michigan. The game was sentimental for former CMU coach Alex Weisenburger and player Evan Crawford, who now both wear the Eagle's colors. FGCU won a big game for the two former Chippewas and played a solid defenisive game thanks mostly to the goaltending of Nick Fernandez. The final score was 4-1 for FGCU with the goals being credited to Aquino, Galbraith, Moore, and Easton. Next up for FGCU was the defending 2007 National Champions, the Michigan State Spartans. |

| would fight off three Spartan defenders and slide the game winner past Justin Sand to give FGCU the victory in overtime with a final score of 5-4. Coach Brinkworth described as the effort of the Eagles as "a solid team effort, with contributions from every player on the ice". Andrew Kobrin stopped 34 of 38 shots between the pipes to earn his biggest victory of the season. Last up for the Eagles was the hometown Grand Valley State Lakers. In was the team's fifth game in as many days and fatigue became a factor in this one. With that said, the Eagles still played a strong game for forty minutes and were able to mount a 4-2 lead going into the third period. With some heavy legs, and a some bad mental mistakes, the Lakers were able to capitalize on some power play opportunities and score three unanswered goals in third period to take a 5-4 lead with minutes to play. Grand Valley would seal the deal with an empty-netter, ending the Eagles Michigan roadtrip with loss. All in all, it was a very successful trip for FGCU as they finished the weekend with a record of 3-2 against some of the top club teams in the country. FGCU returns home next weekend to host the NC State Wolfpack at Germain Arena in Fort Myers, Florida. |
